7 Ways To Improve Your chance at winning Yahtzee

Yahtzee is probably one of the most well-known dice games and while it is a game mostly of luck, there are a few strategies that might help you improve your chance at winning. Below you will find my tips that I use when playing, however, if you have any, post a comment down below!

1. Always aim for the bonus

The bonus in the top section is one of the best ways to get an advantage to others and if you do it correctly, you have a very big chance of getting it. The key is to try to get it as early as possible. If you try to fill in your numbers at the end, you are more than likely to only get one or two (sometimes none!) of each number which especially hurts if it's a high number.

2. Score 4 of a kinds as a number in the top section

To be honest, it almost never happens to me that I get exactly 3 of each number in the top section. This is why you should always allow extra room - read the next tip below and you'll find out why!

3. Bad rolls

At some point in the game you are going to get a bad roll and this is something you just have to deal with. While the chance space might seem tempting, always consider taking a number instead. If you roll one 1 or two 2's, scoring these rolls as numbers is always better.

Example: You roll 1, 2, 4, 4, 6. Taking 1 point in ones is better than chance because it's easy to make up.

4. Don't put a zero in Yahtzee early in the game

Yahtzees are the best way to get ahead of others, especially if you get more than one of them. While they might be incredibly difficult to get, not under any circumstance should you give up on it early in the game, because there is so much that could happen. If you're at the end though, go ahead and cross is out if you need to - unless if getting a Yahtzee is the only way you can beat your opponent.

5. Never go for full houses

You will eventually roll a full house unintentionally at some point in the game and when you do, take your full house! Rolling one like this is very likely to happen but trying to get it by trying to roll it is surprisingly low mainly because it's hard to decide what dice to keep when going for it.

Example: You roll 1, 2, 4, 4, 6. You hold the 4's and roll the rest and get 1, 5, 6. What do you do now?
